Back in 2017 most my time was spent just working away in a cafe Nero during the day then driving down to service stations or 24hr Starbucks’ to work all night.
(And squeezing in a handful of PT clients from 6am — 12pm, training and studying.)
I was trying to build my online business. I’d taken myself down to the minimum amount of PT clients I could do so to give me time to build it.
And I’d just WORK.
I wanted it bad.
The problem is, I would work on the stupidest shit. I just thought if I put enough effort in, things would work out.
I must have build my website from scratch every month, which got no visitors anyway.
Built programmes to sell online for peanuts which no one bought anyway.
Wrote content that no body cared about.
But I thought, if I work enough hours things will work out…
The reality was, things were working so slowly.
If I worked out my hourly wage at that point I must have been making about £3 an hour or less.
And looking back there was one thing holding me back from the growth I wanted…
One mindset I was holding onto…
The Lone Wolf Mindset.
Most men have it.
“I can do this alone”
“I don’t need anyone else”
In fact for me it was more along the lines of…
“I SHOULD be able to do this alone.”
There was almost shame around needing help…
This stopped me doing the thing that changed my life for ever…
Getting a Mentor.
(A Mentor is someone who’s achieved a similar thing as you want to achieve, that is committed to helping you grow and shares their lessons with you)
I knew it would help… But I was stopping myself…
What was stopping me at the time was…
- I had internalised the idea that growth was slow, so I had basically normalised the fact nothing was changing…
- It almost felt like I was admitting failure getting a mentor…
- Paying money was scary. It made this real. It made going all in essential, if I wanted to make the money back at least…
- Funnily enough, this fear, this “all in-ness” is actually the medicine I needed.
But eventually it got too much.
I just kept working harder and things weren’t changing.
The worst part for me was that I knew how hard I could work. I knew how hard I was working. So if I knew what to do, I’d fly!
So I bit the bullet…
I got my first ever mentor.
I remember the price scaring me so much. Which is funny because a year later I payed my next mentor literally 20x more upfront! (Shows how quickly growth can happen)
Once I signed up, everything changed.
My work ethic stayed high, but now I was actually working on the effective tasks…
I realised the mindset issues that were holding me back too.
And in just 7 months, I’d more than tripled my business.
How did it help so much?
- I had the roadmap payed out in front of me. I knew what I needed to work on, and what I didn’t. (E.g. You don’t need to build a sexy website. I still don’t have one…)
- Having someone that’s been through it all to be able to message and ask any questions to along the way to limit any time stuck in decision mode, and stay in execution mode.
- Having my mentor believe that I COULD be way further ahead that I am now, and telling me I’m moving slow… Speeding me up.
- and group of others on the same journey way ahead of me, showing me what’s actually possible…
Honestly, when you realise you can just pay people that are ahead of you, and they will bring you up to closer to they are — It’s a cheat code.
You begin to realise that money is not something to protect with your life. It’s a tool to be used to take you further.
You also realise that investing into yourself is a much better investment that in the usual financial investments. You want to build a money making vehicle first, then invest in those things…
(I invested £750 and in 7 months time was making 6k per month. Where else are you going to get that return?)
Now it’s something I do religiously. I never don’t have a mentor. As I level up, they level up. I’ve now invested over £80K+ in my own mentorship and I will never stop.
Trust me brother, this is the path to success. Get some skin in the game and grow.
